MEDIA RELEASE

Adriana for Elwick

Sunday 28 March, 2010.

Glenorchy Mayor Adriana Taylor today confirmed she will contest the May 1 election for the Legislative Council seat of Elwick.

“I wanted to wait until I knew the results of the State Election before deciding whether to run or not, but it is actually the uncertainty of last Saturday’s result that has ultimately helped make up my mind,” Ald Taylor said.

“Under minority government, I believe it will be more than important than ever that Glenorchy has a strong, independent voice in the Legislative Council representing the interests of Glenorchy and the broader Tasmanian community.”

“My record as Mayor is one of standing up and fighting for the best interests of Glenorchy with no fear or favour and this is the approach I will take in the Upper House.”

Ald. Taylor said the next Tasmanian Parliament would have to deal with a number of major issues that will directly impact on the residents of Glenorchy.

“I firmly believe it is in our community’s best interests to have an independent voice in the Upper House,” she said.

“As a former teacher, I am particularly concerned about the future of the post-Year 10 sector and ensuring that if the Tasmania Tomorrow reforms are dropped, it is replaced with a system for the long-term and not just another stop-gap until the next change of government.”

“I also believe the issue of local government reform will soon be back on the agenda and I want to make sure that any further reform in this area is not just a repeat of the water and sewerage changes that at the potential to impact severely and unfairly on Glenorchy ratepayers.”

“What I offer is a strong independent voice in the Upper House that will scrutinise government legislation with the best interests of Glenorchy at the forefront of my mind, rather than the interests of party politics.”

Ald. Taylor said that if elected next month she would see-out her current term as Mayor until the next local government election in October 2011.

“There is still much I want to achieve at Council, but I also have a responsibility to look to the future and I firmly believe the best contribution I can now make to the Glenorchy community is as the next Independent Member for Elwick.”

“It also ensures there will be no expensive bi-election for the position of Mayor while allowing time for other Alderman on Council to consider running for the Mayoral position next year.”

Adriana Taylor will be available for interview today at 11am.
